How insurance could recapture the High Street's imagination

Ideas to be more retail than detail

Worry+Peace is a reviews-led marketplace for insurance. We're connecting the sector in ways it's never been before. We like to inspire with ideas, helping providers energise means helping buyers have better choices.

We're big believers that society will always value the right kind of face to face proposition - here's how we think a community presence could be better for insurance.

The first job of any presence in a community is to create trust. That's your currency as an insurance provider. Let's explore:

🚀Space not desks

People are expecting you to try and sell them insurance. Surprise them. Sell them a relationship.

Is your unit all about the desks? Desks are not what should be filling your square footage in a modern High St - space for guests should be. Can you create more space with what you have? If you can't - perhaps consider unit that can. If your high street is anything like normal - units are not in short supply.

Some of our ideas are requisite on you having a little space to play with. If you treat your high street presence as a purely transactional environment - we think you might be missing out on the chance to become a hub, create loyalty through relationships.

🌐Free Wifi

If you have space, explore creating free wifi and a seating area for flexible working. You could also offer free direct insurance education. Let people come search for car or insurances you don't offer - and give them some pointers over a cup of caffeine. Many of them will own businesses to which you CAN offer advice.

Registering is just a survey, or their renewal date and details. You can keep refreshing the password to flush out people who want something for nothing.

Hire Baristas

People love coffee, even if it's a couple chairs and a part time thing - why not do a deal with your local independent coffee shop and run a pop up cafe a couple times a month?

To qualify for coffee ration, perhaps they join a newsletter, get a quote, buy a quote. It works for Waitrose. (Oh, and the free wifi won't hurt!)

🧐Become Gazeable

Do you have a branch window? Do you think insurance discounts are a reason to stop and gaze? How many times, though, have you stopped and looked at a house for sale?

Find your nearest estate agents - offer them FREE window space for their best 1, 2, 3, 4 bed homes. Each week, from each agent, pick your winner. Stick it in your window. Oh, and make sure to quote on the insurance to cover it...

You're also in the business of risk! What's that any given day... why not have a risk barometer, why not stick a big screen up with risk-related headlines, or examples of losses locally.

People are nosy.

The longer they linger, the more likely you'll prime them to take more steps towards your service.

🔒Sell Risk Hardware

You're in the business of risk. An insurance policy is only as good as the risk management that comes with it. If you're a high street broker - it might be that there's local security companies or suppliers you could become a reseller/introducer for. (They'll need insurance, too...)

Find a basket of suppliers and cut deals. Get some sample products and create some shelves or spots to sell. People need padlocks. People need motion lighting. Smart Doorbells. Alarms. Safes.

Art is also a great magnet for people - why not find space for a local contemporary art gallery on wall? No stock price, all margin.

☀️Create Lateral Services

Virtual offices are expensive. Perhaps you could offer a secure virtual office service. Perhaps you could accept parcels for companies. Set a rate for existing customers that's cheaper.

Safe Deposit boxes - whilst a far more sizeable investment - pay for the entire rent of one major high street bank!

A soundproofed meeting room could also be used by clients for other services meetings - or podcasts!

There's a sub-let opportunity here, too. Could you swarm with other services companies to co-share desks?

💈Be Contemporary

People DO judge books, wine and products by their covers. There's nothing like a good bit of signage. Perhaps sticking the word "insurance" on it isn't the answer.

Consider how your brand could be made more retail than detail. Offer the signage company on-selling access to your many buyers. You might even get a bloomin' good rate. (They also buy insurance.)

We'd also suggest you ask us to send you a window sticker - review us on Worry+Peace! We'd be honoured to send it. Why should restaurants get all the fun with TripAdvisor and Zagat, huh?
